One person spoke during a public hearing Monday concerning the reinstatement of fares for Rome Transit Department buses.

The proposed rates are $1.50 for the Fixed Route Regular Full Fare, 75 cents for the Fixed Route Senior/Disabled/Student Fare, and $2.25 for the Paratransit Service Fare.

Sara Dahlice Malone told commissioners that many citizens do not have a family to help them or access to transportation.

“They depend on the bus service and they live on very limited, minimal income,” she said. “One of my concerns is for our senior citizens and handicapped. 25 cents may not be a lot to some of us, but it makes a big difference to many people. We don’t want our citizens out there walking to where they will be in traffic or take ill while walking.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government stepped in with additional funding that covered 100% of operating expenses, which allowed RTD to offer free ridership.

However, that funding has run out.

The Rome City Commission is expected to take a final vote on January 16.

The rates would be effective March 31, 2025.
