Murray County files PFAS lawsuit

Thursday, January 2, 2025–6:55 p.m.

-Staff reports-

Another lawsuit has been filed, seeking to recoup the cost of cleaning up PFAS chemicals.

Murray County is suing a number of chemical companies and carpet manufacturers over the so-called “forever chemicals” that have been used to make carpet stain resistant.

In November, Calhoun-based Mohawk Industries filed suit claiming they were kept in the dark by chemical companies regarding the risk of PFAS.

In August, a consent decree filed in a federal district court settled a water pollution case between the City of Calhoun and a pair of environmental groups.

In the summer of 2023, the City of Rome reached a settlement in a lawsuit against chemical companies, carpet manufacturers, and others regarding hazardous chemicals discharged into the Oostanaula River.
